STRATEGIC ADVISORY SERVICES

THE OFFERING

This advisory service is focused on you. It is designed to resolve your challenges. It is oriented toward fueling your ideas and initiatives. It is focused on helping you determine solutions that strategically impact you and your team.

You are the problem solver. The advisor is your customized resource. He is your personal idea curator. He facilitates thought, scenario exploration, offers new information and – when appropriate – new relationships. This engagement is a safe place to explore, to soundboard, and to learn from success and failure.

The best advisors are trusted. This is why the first several weeks of this engagement will be focused on building a relationship. Your advisor doesn’t expect trust to be built in weeks, but the first few weeks will tell you if there is a strong enough foundation to keep going.

THE ENGAGEMENT

Though every conversation is unique, they all remain focused on what is currently on your desk for today, tomorrow, and beyond the horizon. You bring the agenda. You lead the call. Your advisor listens and asks questions that provoke thought. He offers his own thoughts or ideas if prompted, or if there is organic space in the conversation and relationship to do so. He reminds you of what was previously covered, helps you sort it out, and processes with you what is most important and impactful.

A one-page summary of each confidential conversation with your advisor includes key takeaways, action steps, and opportunities for accountability, for you and your team. Elements in each summary are linked to previous summaries and to outside resources, if applicable. The conversation is the service. The summary is the deliverable.

Summaries grow in value as conversations build upon one another and form longer threads of strategy and proposals for action. Like your thinking from one day to the next, the summaries are not isolated; they are part of a continuum that your advisor helps you keep organized and relevant.

Each conversation is one hour. A maximum of two conversations are offered per month. Each engagement is a minimum of twelve months. The first month is our investment in you.

YOUR FIRST STEP

You begin this process with a 30-minute discovery call. This call is our investment in a relationship with you, and a low-risk opportunity for you to get to know your advisor and the advisory service.

Here’s what to expect on the discovery call:

  • Answer some light questions about your work, your role, your management style, and your interests;
  • Talk about management style, teams and operating systems, and “subordinate-imposed time”;
  • Ask questions about your advisor’s experience, his work and role, his management style, and his interests; and,
  • Ask questions about the engagement, the value, the cost, and the deliverable.

Expect to decide before the end of the discovery call whether or not you would like to keep going.

If you decide to move forward, you commit to spending two hours on the phone with your advisor over the following 45 days.

Before the end of the second meeting, expect to decide whether or not you would like to continue for the remaining 11 months.

YOUR ADVISOR

Samuel Logan is your advisor. He is a global citizen. He has lived abroad for over ten years, is married to a Portuguese-Brazilian dual national, and is the employer of young professionals from over two dozen countries, and as many languages and cultures. Brazil and Spain are where he has traveled the most. Hyderabad, India is where he has traveled the farthest. Wau, South Sudan is where he has traveled the most distance from the “West.”

Sam is fluent in Spanish and Portuguese. He holds a BA in Spanish and Psychology and an MA in International Policy Studies with a specialization in the economics of black markets. He is a twice-published author and recognized subject matter expert for Latin American political history, regional geopolitics and organized crime, and black market economics. He is a practiced public speaker and guest lecturer, and has published dozens of articles on security and development in Latin America.

For over ten years Sam was a subject matter expert instructor within the United States Intelligence Community. During this time, he developed and annually delivered over ten courses on Latin America history, politics, economics, and the business of organized crime. Many of these classes, though updated annually, are still in use.

He has advised military executives at the US Department of Defense and civilian leadership in the State, Treasury, and Justice Departments. He has worked closely with CEOs, COOs, CSOs, General Counselors and Board Members to define strategy and help them implement it for operations across the Americas.

Sam founded his first company in Chile in 1999; it leveraged the coming tide of Web 1.0 technology in South America to design and install local area networks in small and mid-sized Chilean businesses. His second company, founded in Chile in 2001, was a subscription-based newsletter that covered the technology sector in Latin America. Southern Pulse, founded in 2004 in Brazil, is his third company. Evidencity, founded in 2016 in Washington, DC, is his fourth company.

Since 2004, Sam has worked with clients in North, Central and South America, and Europe. The majority of his clients hold executive roles with publicly traded companies that operate in the extractives, logistics, manufacturing, renewable energy and technology sectors in Latin America. He has led or personally conducted impactful investigative work in every country in Latin America, except French Guiana. He has managed dozens of enhanced due diligence investigations, developed a robust and ready source network in Latin America, and to this day leverages decades-old relationships to access privileged information on behalf of his clients.

For nearly 20 years, Sam has nurtured a philosophy for leadership through building companies and advising corporate leaders to:

  • Promote relationship over transaction;
  • Focus on abundance not scarcity;
  • Be faithful not fearful; and,
  • Define failure as an unwillingness to learn.

These are the cornerstones of his management style.

Today, he chairs the leadership team at Southern Pulse, where he is also the in-house Strategic Advisor. He is also the CEO of Evidencity, a venture capital-backed, tech-enabled service that facilitates financial inclusion and infrastructure investment, and combats forced labor and human trafficking in the world.

Sam brings to the Southern Pulse Advisory Practice over two decades of managing businesses and people. He has developed and managed hundreds of source relationships with individuals from every socioeconomic level, on both the light and dark side of the global economy, and across three continents. His professional network is exceptionally deep with federal and state government contacts who regulate extractives, manufacturing, logistics, renewable energy, and technology. He maintains long-standing relationships with public and private sector contacts who engage in law enforcement and the collection of information to develop intelligence in support of public security. He counts many friends among the journalists who keep them accountable.

Sam currently lives outside Charlotte, NC with his wife and three children. He works between his home office in the Carolinas, corporate office in Annapolis, MD, and a summer office in Aveiro, Portugal. He is often in Toronto, Washington DC, Miami, Madrid, London, and various locations across the Americas. In his off time, Sam enjoys woodworking, extreme whitewater kayaking, and teaching his kids how to play fútbol.
