Mining protests in northern provinces turn deadly

14-Jul-2012

On 3 July 2012, for the third time in two years, President Ollanta Humala declared a state of emergency in three northern provinces where anti-mining rallies have turned deadly. Protesters gathered in Celedin in Cajamarca province to condemn the Congas gold mining project operated by U.S. company Newmont Mining. Subsequent clashes with police left five dead, including two officers.
